About the Item

Sandra Cohen’s “Babies ate my Dingo” is a 24 x 24 x 1 inch acrylic painting on cradled wood, in light tones of mint green, blue, orange, pink, yellow and red. Realistically depicted in colorized tones, two babies descend from the sky to attack a 1970s Scwhinn bicycle. The edges of the scene are cropped by a randomly striped, wavy border that weaves in and out of itself. This painting is unframed and ready to hang, with white painted sides and the signature on the back. Sandra Cohen’s dreamlike painting and mixed media work explores the paradoxical nature she finds everywhere. Cohen layers a constantly shifting ground of memory with snippets of lyrics, invasive ‘earworms’, and the human tendency to create order from chaos. Music is intimately entwined with memory for Cohen, who has been a performing musician and songwriter. She also has a deep interest in science, especially the concepts of modern physics. Using techniques that vary from wet to dry and tight to loose, and processes that may weave between digital and tactile, the act of creating the work also reflects what she hopes emerges: glimpses of a true/false spectrum wavering into being as lustrous, rhythmic, and often darkly humorous hybrids. Cohen is represented by Fountain Street Gallery in Boston, MA.
